An interesting study by The NPD Group in the U.S. reveals that Americans are more likely than ever to carry their lunches from home — with predictable effects for lunch business at restaurants.
Some interesting facts from the July 24 news release:
- Adult males carry brown-bagged lunches most frequently
- White collar professionals with mid- to high-incomes tend tho have the greatest interest in carrying their weekday lunch from home
- The most frequent brown-baggers pack their lunch an average of three times per week
- Among consumers who typically order their lunch meals from restaurants, nearly half said they were visiting less often
Why the shift from freshly-made BLTs to home-made PB&Js? The top reason for the switch was the cost, with 93% of those surveyed citing financial concerns. Heath and nutrition ranked second, followed by convenience. Other reasons offered included taste, diet, quality and environmental concerns.
